The New Zealand Raptor Trust
$21,000 – Raptor Education Resources
The New Zealand Raptor Trust’s primary focus is to rescue, rehabilitate and release sick, injured or orphaned raptors. Our secondary focus is to educate the community on these marvellous birds.
The New Zealand Raptor Trust was established in 2016 to provide care and housing for sick, injured or orphaned birds of prey. At the time of its establishment there was no other facility in the South Island that specifically focused on rehabilitating birds of prey.
The vision of the Trust is to develop a facility which will be the forefront of New Zealand raptor research, rehabilitation and education in the South Island of New Zealand. The mission of the Trust is to ensure the longevity of the New Zealand Raptors for our akonga and to re-establish raptor populations. The purpose of this trust is to ensure sustainable wild populations of raptors exist for future generations to enjoy through rehabilitation programs, captive management, education and advocacy.
Other than rehabilitating raptors, our secondary focus is ‘tell the world’ all about Raptors and raising awareness on all aspects of their life and how they ‘fit’ into our ecosystem, so that they are here for future generations. This is particularly important for the NZ Falcon (karearea), which is a “Threatened Nationally Vulnerable” species. To help the community understand and learn about these birds, we have an active education programme for all ages from Pre-school right through to Aged Care facilities and everyone in between.
