Central South Island Cycle Trail
$100,000 per year for 3 years
The Central South Island Cycle Trail aims to construct a multi-purpose trail from Timaru to Lake Tekapo over a multi-year long term project to connect communities in South Canterbury and connecting with the Alps to Ocean trail to act as a spine feeder for that trail. (Map attached below) Eventually they aim to enable and support the branching out of other cycle trails in and around the Central South Island. (For example, to Temuka and Geraldine).
Stage 1 of the project was completed in late 2021. It runs 14km from Washdyke in Timaru to Pleasant Point. The trail is already well-used by walkers, runners, cyclists, wheelchair and mobility scooter users.
“This new route will be an important one, both linking us with existing trails and giving a foundation to develop new connections in the district, and it offers a great opportunity for our community to benefit from the boom in cycle touring.” Nigel Bowen – Mayor
The Community Trust of Mid & South Canterbury is supportive and excited about this project that will provide ongoing community benefits – economically, socially, culturally and environmentally. We have granted $100,000 per annum for 3 years.
